King Robert Baratheon has arrived
in Winterfell to visit his old friend Eddard Stark; a feast was held in his
honor. During the night, Jon sits with squires instead of his family. Jon’s
uncle, Benjen Stark comes by to talk and after a few glasses of wine, Jon’s liquid
courage lets him discuss how he wishes to join the Night’s Watch. Benjen shuts
him down by saying he is far too young to be apart of the Night’s Watch. As a
result, Jon makes a huge scene and flees outside for some time to think. There
he runs into Tyrion, a dwarf and the youngest sibling of the Lannisters.
Tyrion, who eggs him on by calling him a bastard, gives Jon useful advice.
The importance of this chapter is
it gives you an outlook at how harsh people at this time can be towards people
who are different. A person with a disability like Tyrion, a dwarf is called
names like an Imp. Unfortunately, people do not take them seriously and cannot
thrive in their society. Catelyn, Eddard’s wife despises Jon and ignores him.
Since he is a bastard he is restricted on hanging out with the royal family and
can’t become a knight or anything higher in society. Only option is the Night’s
watch. This chapter introduces the Lannisters siblings where later on you find
out scandalous news involving them. I liked this chapter cause it was the first
time Jon actually showed how much it bothers him being the bastard of the
family.
Well done Lucija. I definitely appreciate the focus on Jon's character and I think you nail your observations. Definitely a good look out how much the prejudice hurts him.
