Game of Thrones: Jon

The chapter that I chose to do my blog post on was Jon's chapter. This chapter is told from the point of view of Ned Stark's bastard son, Jon Snow. In this chapter the feast for King Baratheon is already underway and Jon is forced to sit away from his brothers and sisters as it can potentially be seen as an insult to the king. However, he finds comfort in his surroundings as he listens to the stories of those around him. His uncle eventually approaches him and they talk, eventually landing on the subject Jon becoming a member of the Nights Watch, to which his uncle warns him against. Jon's uncle makes a joke about bastard children and Jon storms outside angrily where he meets Tyrion Lannister, who confronts him and discusses how he should embrace what he is and wear it as an armor instead of having it be used to hurt him, then Tyrion reenters the party and so ends the chapter.

Being a very big fan of the show, and a vey big fan of Jon Snow as well as Tyrion Lannister, it was easy for me to pick this chapter. Jon Snow is a very deep character and is wise beyond his years. He sees the truth behind everyone's phony smiles and easily can tell what kind of person someone is. Also the way he is treated is very important since he isn't necessarily welcomed by all. This shows how bastard children are regarded in the story and the hardships that they must face. When he discusses joining the Nights Watch his uncle says that he is far too young and to come back after he's "fathered a few bastards of his own", which highly upsets Jon showing that he detests that he is a bastard. More information is also given about Tyrion. He is regarded as a monster when he is first introduced in to the story, but when he speaks to Jon he seems to be wise and gives him good advice on how to handle his problems. Though this chapter was still rather early on in the book it adds further depth to each of the characters and slowly starts to set in motion the events that occur later on in the story.

  1. Excellent summary and analysis Josh. I am glad you are a fan of the show, that should certainly help with your posts. Nice job on the quote which you use as evidence. Perfect. You do a good job of balancing both summary and analysis.
