Game of Thrones #4

I chose to look into Jon's chapter pages 552-567. This chapter begins with the men in the forest investigating the body of one of the men who went with Jon's uncle to go out into the forest. The body is peculiar because there is no deterioration, making it seem like a fresh kill, however, the blood is dried and there is no blood near the body at all. Sam and Jon do a good job of analyzing this and the older men are pleased. Jon gets in a fight at dinner and is sent to his room but during the night he hears something peculiar. He fights off this evil thing (dead Othor?) with black hands and blue eyes and saves Lord Mormont.

I chose this chapter because I think the things happening at the Night's Watch are foreshadowing the tale of what is to come to the Seven Kingdoms. It also makes me happy to see Sam developing and kind of finding his place in the more intelligence-aspect of the Night's Watch. No one really knows what to make of this finding because it is not really like anything anyone has ever seen before and I believe that's what makes it so frightening. I also believe the part where Jon gets in a fight is particularly important because of the Jon's last chapter in our reading where he discusses with Maester Aemon the consequences of love. It is clear in how worked up and defensive Jon gets that he truly loves his father. Ned took him under his wing, a man whose main focus in honor, and raised him. It is not the usual relationship between a bastard and father of this time and I believe Jon recognizes that and it means a lot to him. Will this relationship come in between his duty to the Night's Watch? Lastly, I can't believe he took a fiery curtain into his own hand and threw it on the scary monster, he's so brave.
